There is one part of Tommy Thompson's video that has always stood out for me and from time to time would torture my mind: ![]() I first started seriously pondering this question after Tommy Thompson, from AI and Games, took another deep dive in to Isolation's AI in Revisiting the AI of Alien: Isolation video/article, and Mark Brown's 3-part series on the Design of Stealth games, which conveniently came out around the same time (I became even more invested in the topic after my subsequent playthrough of Theif: The Dark Project, which is an incredible game and I highly recommend it to most Alien: Isolation fans, especially those who loved Isolation for its stealth gameplay, sound design, lighting and atmosphere. That is for us basically a common knowledge.īut here's what I am wondering - can the latter be said about Isolation's lighting? To leave as few of you of the loop as possible I'll reiterate: I want to discuss Isolation's lighting exactly in the context of gameplay. Alien: Isolation's sound design, being one of the main ways with which the game communicates with the player, and one of the key ways the player can interact with it, its world and entities, is very sophisticated and in-depth and plays if not even the main role in creating and maintaining tension. The incredibly rich ambience and soundscape of the Sevastopol station and each of its rooms, corridors, hell, even corners, play a huge part in creating and maintaining game's suffocating atmosphere and strong sense of place.Īt the same time, the sound is one of the core systems in the game, around which it was build around. ![]() I am confident that most of us here will agree, that Isolation's sound design is exceptional, both aesthetically and from a gameplay point of view.
